Every mail brings us good news. Every wind bears on its wings the shouts of victory! Mississippi too, has thrown off the trammels of Loco-Focoism, and has taken her station by the side of those glorious States which have signally rebuked misgovernment and faction! The scales which formerly blinded the eyes of the people are falling off, and Whig Democracy, the Democracy of 1789 is triumphant! All hail! The shout was first taken up in Tennessee, and now makes the welkin ring from the fogs of Passamaquoddy to the hammocks of Florida—from the shining sands of Cape Hatteras to where the mighty Pacific leaves the beaches of the Oregon! Our country is safe from the taint of Loco-Focoism, and good government will again drop its blessings "Like the gentle dew from Heaven" on our abused country. Let the patriot rejoice & let no party jealousies, nor abstractions be suffered to break the ranks of the Whig Democracy. Let not the question of the Presidency, let not men's names be suffered to sever the bond of Union which now holds us together as a triumphant party, but let cordial co-operation make our ranks one solid phalanx of opposition to Federal Van Burenism.—Ed. Mississippi Elections.
The following is the result of the election in this State, as near as can be ascertained:
WHIG.
Governor. V.B.
MORGAN, 9903. McNUTT, 12,922.
GRIMBALL, 4877.
14,780.
Whig aggregate majority, 1,898.
Congress.
PRENTISS, 13,477 CLAIBORNE, 5819.
WARD, 12,236 GHOLSON, 5509.
Prentiss' (Whig) majority over McNutt 555.
Prentiss and Ward, (Whigs) are elected to Congress, and McNutt in consequence of a division in the Whig ranks, is elected Governor by a minority of 1,898 votes. Collins, (W.) is elected Attorney General without doubt and so is Philips to the office of State Treasurer against Fall, (V. B.) As it respects the complexion of the State Legislature, we can form no opinion.
