NEW YORK. OCTOBER 27.

By letters from Barbadoes, dated the 24th of September, brought by the brig Duke of Bedford, arrived here yesterday morning, we are informed that Admiral Hyde Parker, with the British fleet, was at that time, and for a fortnight before had been cruising to windward of that island, and intended staying in that latitude til the last day of September, to avoid the hurricanes.

Extract of a letter from Barbadoes, September 24.

"I have the pleasure to tell you that the Council and Assembly have ordered the island to be properly fortified, and the inhabitants are determined to defend it, and therefore I do not fear the French if they bring six or seven thousand men, as I apprehend they carried to Grenada; indeed if they exceed that number I have not the least idea of their taking the island, as we can muster ten thousand whites able to bear arms, and at least four times that number of blacks."
