Men on Four New Haven Papers Walk Out After Reporting for Work.
New Haven, Conn., Sept. 15.—Reporters and editors employed on New Haven's four newspapers went on strike today to enforce demands for an eight-hour working day and minimum wages of $5 a day for reporters and $6 a day for desk men. The strike followed the organizing a week ago of the News Writers Equity association, with a membership reported to include every newspaper man in New Haven except the managing editors of the four papers.
The entire staffs of the Union and Times-Leader reported for work this morning, and at 8 o'clock walked out. The news writers claim that only two of their members did not go out. The men employed on the Journal-Courier, morning paper, will go out tonight, it was stated.
Members of the staff of the Evening Register did not report for work today, claiming the publisher, John D. Jackson, had informed them Saturday night that they had forfeited their positions by joining the association.
The city was placarded with posters today notifying the public of the strike. The news writers issued a statement saying that they had plans under way to publish a daily newspaper.
The News Writers' Equity association, it was stated, is not connected with any other labor organization.
