Full Text
At least one half of the growing tobacco crop consists of small underling plants, which can never get to the house, and the remaining portion is sickly and spindling for the want of rain. The corn crop too, is suffering severely, and a full crop can not be made. Our most experienced planters think that it is too late for much improvement in tobacco, no matter how seasonable the weather may become.
The Somerset Union also says:
We are suffering severely from drought. The corn crop must be materially shortened, and vegetation of every kind looks parched. Unless we have rain shortly the stock in many parts of our county must suffer for water. Our farmers—or those who have not already finished—are busily engaged thrashing out wheat and oats. The hum of thrashing machines may be heard in every quarter; but we understand that the yield of both these crops is very poor.
