HELP OUR EASTERN FRIENDS.
Republicans, good news comes from the East. Everywhere we are gaining. The State of Nevada may decide this contest. Do your duty as your friends in the East are doing theirs. If you do not to-day you will have the consolation of knowing for the next four years that you are living under a ruler of your own choice—under a man who never encouraged treason, but fought it in the field and in Congress. Do your duty and vote for Hayes and Wheeler.
TO-DAY.
Remember this one thing. Republicans. Every vote counts, and one vote may carry the State. The most important election in which the American people have taken part for the last hundred years is in progress to-day. The probability is that the largest popular vote ever cast in this country will be cast to-day. Upon the result of that vote depends the future of this nation as a republic founded upon the rights of all men of whatever race or color. The day when the Declaration of Independence was signed; the day when the rebel Democracy fired on Fort Sumter, was not more momentous in the history of the American nation than this seventh of November, 1876. On this day we tell to the world what we mean. On this day we assure the world that Republican institutions are founded on the firm basis of the intelligence of the people; or we say to the world that the citizens of a Republic are unworthy of citizenship: that they are swayed by every demagogue who can make a good speech, no matter whether the burden of that speech is sound logic and common sense, or thin sophistry based upon falsehoods which are transparent to every man of ordinary reason. It is Republicanism that is on trial to-day. When the News reaches our readers there will be but two short hours in which to exercise the right of voting for the men who are to rule this country for the next four years. Let every Republican who has not voted; every man who loves his country and wishes to see it prosperous in the future, utilize these two hours, and cast his vote for Hayes and Wheeler. The Democrats have not been neglectful of their duty to their party. They know from bitter experience that every vote counts, and they have turned out in full force during the morning. They are working with the energy of despair. We have no cause to be desperate, but we must meet their despair by polling our full vote. If we do this in Nevada, as our political friends are doing it in the East, Hayes and Wheeler will be elected by a majority as large as that of Grant in 1872. Republicans of Nevada, you who have not voted already, see to it that you cast your ballot before the polls close at six o'clock to-night. We are sure of carrying this State, if every Republican votes; but if a false confidence seizes upon us, and Republicans stay away from the polls, the Democrats may gain control of Nevada, and disgrace us as a State in the eyes of the world. Remember this one thing. Every vote counts, and one vote may carry a State.
