Antigua, dated May 3d 1758.

We are sending you our Papers; by which you'll find a Number of French Privateers have been very busy, and they don't now make such Depredations upon our Trade as they did in the Spring. Commodore Moore is an active Man, and very well liked. Last Saturday he sailed on a Cruize with 5 Ships of the Line, two 50's and two Twenty's. Yesterday about 200 French Prisoners were carried away in 2 Flags of Truce thither: Before that, we had upwards of 200 here, all taken in Privateers.

Our Judge of Admiralty condemns all Dutchmen who have the Enemy's Permission to Trade, upon a Presumption, that such a Permission from the Enemy naturalizes the Bottom: And this is said to be the Practice of the Admiralty in England.—Certainly we ought to do all in our Power to check the Statia Trade; for there is little Reason to doubt but that the French in Canada are supplied with Provisions from Martinico, which is first brought to St. Eustatius from Ireland. According to the last Calculations, there has been more Beef brought into St. Eustatius, for Twelve months past, than could be consumed both there and in all the French Islands.
