By RALPH H. MARLATT
They are knocking at our door, let them in
The refugees, banished from their native land,
Set to wandering the world along
Striving in some distant place to build a home,
And heal the scars wrought by the inhumanity of man.
They are men, they are brothers, the refugees.
They are knocking at our door, let them in.
They are weary, let them rest.
They are bleeding, heal their wounds,
They have been crushed, lift them up.
We who believe in freedom cannot deny them the right to be free.
We who enjoy the right of liberty must bestow the blessings of liberty,
We dare not be deaf to their pleading,
We cannot shut out the sight of their tears.
These exiles are brothers, hear their plea.
They are knocking at our door, let them in.
The union has taken up the torch. A few weeks ago an officer of the UAW said:
"We are tired of PURSUING happiness, we are determined to CATCH UP to it and we will so organize the workers that we will demand the respect of the owners and we will be able to share in the happiness and the liberty of our nation."
And Pres. Lewis has declared for the CIO:
"The problem of unemployment is the number one problem of the nation. The right of our people to live is a right that must be guaranteed by the government."
Yes, we union members have a big job in the next year. A job that can be done only through organized effort. Our power must be felt on the job as well as politically so that the people will begin to rule and the people will begin to have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I recommend that you spread the gospel of the CIO so that all men may live. Can any group have a higher ideal or a greater purpose?
