New Orleans. May 18.-The Hymelia crevasse, thirty-five miles north of New Orleans, will be closed within ten days if the expenditure of a quarter of a million dollars can effect the object desired.
The Mississippi River Commission has decided to appropriate $100,000 for the work and an equal amount, or even more, if it is necessary, has been pledged by property owners affected and state and parish authorities.
Capt. C. O. Shirrell, chief of the United States army engineers in charge of the fourth levee district, has charge of the stupendous job. The work of tying the ends of the crevasse, which reached a width of 720 feet, has begun, and material is assembled for the work of cribbing across the opening.
Several hundred laborers are at work and by tomorrow more than 1,000 men will be on hand and the work will begin in earnest.
The water from the crevasse has spread about nine or ten miles inland and encroached upon the towns along the river north and south of the break, but no lives have been sacrificed.
