The Lowell (Mass.) Courier publishes the following extracts from a letter from a lady in California to her daughter, Mrs. Sullivan Richardson, of Lowell:
SACRAMENTO, Cal., Oct. 2.
Business is exceedingly dull here. The drouth has cut off all business for farmers. There is an immense amount of emigration this season, and there must, of course, be a great deal of suffering among the emigrants before the crops come off another year. In a great many localities there has been nothing at all raised this year, and the people are entirely dependent upon their farms for their daily bread.
The people are actually starving to death at Santa Barbara and St. Louis Obispo, and in that region. One man who owned ten thousand cattle has lost all but sixty by starvation. They are making a great effort in San Francisco to aid the sufferers. They have had several public meetings, and appointed committees to canvass the city. The wealthy business men went around with drays to houses begging clothing and provisions to send to the destitute. They sent away about seven tons. They sent a committee to learn the amount of suffering, and see that the articles were properly distributed.
It is not so bad all over the State, but Southern California has suffered exceedingly. A great many of the farmers about here have not raised a single thing to eat this year. A Mr. Hall dined with us yesterday. He lives eighteen miles away up on the Sacramento river. He said he had not raised the first eatable thing. He had wheat enough on hand to last him till another year. But everything else he has to buy at a high price. This will be a hard winter for people destitute of money.
