Full Text

All aback!—The independent course of John M. Patton, Esq. of the Culpeper district, during the last session of Congress, and which obtained for him the high compliment of being read out of "the party," by the Globe, had not prepared us to hear that he voted for the Van Buren ticket, at the late election. Yet such, we are told by the Alexandria Gazette, is the fact! Mr. Patton may rest assured that a trimmer in politics, "a waiter on Providence," who watches majorities for the purpose of riding upon the tide, will eventually be caught in his craftiness, and, however he may for a time succeed, will finally be deserted by all parties as unworthy of the confidence of either. If he was in heart a friend of Van Buren, he has done, nor have expressed his preference for Judge White, as he did last winter. If he was not, the political complexion of his district should not have driven him from the independent exercise of his rights as an American citizen.
