On Thursday evening of last week, Rev. W. H. Milburn, the blind preacher, delivered the fifth lecture of the course.— His subject was "Aaron Burr," and as interesting as the study of Burr's character has always been it acquired new interest in the hands of the eloquent lecturer. To Burr was ascribed the possession of many rare faculties, the brilliant intellect, tireless energy, polished manners, and a singularly fascinating presence, which seemed to overpower nearly all with whom he came in contact. The lecturer spoke of the exalted political position to which Burr attained, gave him credit for some characteristics which are essential to success, spoke of his declining years, and finally of his death, in penury and neglect.
The lesson to be drawn from the lecture was, that however rich a man may be in natural endowments, how much may he added thereto by education, if the main-spring of such a man's action be purely selfish, and his course be marked by an utter disregard of the rights and feelings of others, sooner or later his ambition will overleap itself, and the golden apples of his pursuit, will turn to ashes at his lips. A course marked with truth and justice will alone lead to unfading honors, and a peaceful death.
As a lecturer, Mr. Milburn possesses few superiors. During an hour and a half, his audience listened with marked attention, and felt richly repaid.
Gough, the Temperance Oracle, delivers the next lecture.
