"When Mr. Gilbert de Voisin, Greffier in Chief of the Parliament, received orders to reassume the function of his post, he wrote the following letter to the Chancellor:
"In consequence of the King's orders, to which I shall always submit myself, I set out this day for Paris, but at the same time I declare, that my honour, my duty, and my conscience do not permit me to perform the functions of an office which is no more. I have taken my oath to the Parliament, and I cannot exercise my functions but in concert with that Parliament. I shall never separate myself from so respectable a body. It is with these sentiments that I have the honour to offer the King my place, praying him to make my lot similar to the other members of my company."
The King having renewed his orders to him, he wrote the following letter:
"I cannot swerve from the answer I gave you yesterday; it contains the true sentiments with which I am animated; my conscience, honour and duty, forbid my doing the function of a charge, which again I offer to the King, praying him not to impute to disobedience a conduct dictated by the purest love, the most sincere attachment and the most profound respect."
Sunday he received a Lettre de Cachet, which exiles him to Beziers in Upper Languedoc, and they signified to him at the same time the Arret of Council, which declares his post confiscated to the King's use, for having acted contrary to the edict which is at present the basis of the modern legislation.
Mr. Gilbert de Voisin's post cost a million, and brings in 100,000 livres. The other Greffiers and Secretaries did not dare to be so bold in action and ran away, but having received orders from the King to resume their service on pain of being imprisoned, the loss of their offices and that their children should be declared unworthy to fill any post in the kingdom, they returned to their duty.
