ABOLITION OF SLAVERY.

An effort is about being made in Great Britain for the final and absolute abrogation of African slavery throughout their dominions. A petition for the commencement of a system, having this object in view, has been presented to parliament from a body of the Society of Friends, by Mr Wilberforce, and notice given by Mr. Fowell Buxton, that he should move to have the subject taken into consideration on the 22d of April. We were informed some months since that, societies were forming in England for this great object, and that a serious attempt would be made to accomplish it as fast as the nature of things would admit: That it will meet with strenuous opposition on the part of the West India planters and merchants we do not doubt. Such was the case with the first attempt to abolish the Slave Trade. The friends of the measure, however, persevered for 20 years, gaining strength at every effort, until at length their labors were crowned with success.

Such we have no doubt will be the result of this new attempt in favor of justice and humanity. The absurdity of boasting of the freedom and justice of their government and institutions, whilst their colonies are blackened with the injustice and cruelty of the most odious and wicked slavery, is too obvious to escape observation, and too gross to be admitted by any reasonable and upright mind. We have long desired to see such a measure as this undertaken--we hope it will not be abandoned until the object is fully accomplished.
