Our City:

Probably the citizens of no other city in the United States, enjoy their existence so much as those of Cincinnati. And the reason is, that no city in the country unites so much of the rustic with the urban, as this place. We surpass all the Atlantic cities in the number of gardens—little plots of ornamental shrubbery, and the like. This fact is of immense importance. The eye seeks refreshment amid the brick walls, and is gratified by the sight of flowers, trees, vines, green-sward and shrubbery.-- The air is purified; room left for its various currents to pass freely about. These gardens exercise the taste, industry and economy of their owners. Co B. neTr said long ago, that flowers and neatness about the grounds of the humblest cottage, told a true tale concerning the interior arrangements, and pointed to the existence of order, sobriety, and intelligence in the cottager.

It is well worth while to walk our streets, occasionally, and observe the amount of good taste and diligence expended in gardening. Each house we pass has its garden plot, with trim walks, nicely kept borders, viney or trellises, and climbing plants about the door. The same attention to cleanliness appears in each; disorder, neglect and filth seem to be put away entirely. There can be no better evidence of good principle and good feeling in the people of a city, than the fact we have been dwelling upon.— We should encourage the spirit; we should patronize florists and nursery-men. This branch of art has attained to a considerable degree of perfection among us, and like music, is ever gratifying--a pleasure which does not exhaust, or call into play a single evil passion. Before any other city in the Union, in this respect, let us keep in the advance and show strangers from the seaboard, that a back-woods city does not lack the refinements and polish of the oldest metropolis.
