Tire Situation Is Still Acute

Demand for passenger car tires has increased so rapidly since the lifting of gasoline rationing that it will be many months before motorists get all the new tires they need, according to OPA District Director Bernard C. Goodwin in Roanoke.

He said that unfilled applications for passenger car tires are at an all time high, while inventories are at all time low the country over. It is expected that the backlog of approved unfilled applications may total one million for the country by the end of September. In this area alone, Mr. Goodwin said, the figure approaches the 15,000 mark.

"These are all applications that have been approved, but local boards can't issue certificates for their purchase because passenger tire quotas have been exhausted," he said.

This explains, he declared, why local boards are forced to turn down thousands of tire applications. He added that in many cases dealers do not have tires enough for all motorists who hold certificates.
