From the Upper River.

The Memphis Appeal of the 26th says,
by an arrival Monday night we have later
intelligence from the upper river.

Both the contending forces have light
batteries planted on the banks of the river
a short distance below Tiptonville-
the Federals occupying several points on
the Missouri shore, and the Confederates
on the east bank.

The Federal gun and mortar boats still
continue a small firing, daily, at long
range, which was being replied to occasionally by our forces, whenever it was
thought an effectual shot could be made.

The casualties upon Island 10 had been
few in number-but one having been
killed.

There seems to be no doubt of the destruction of two of the enemy's gun-boats.
One of them struck by a shot from the
Island, some days since, when she was
immediately towed up the river. Parties
from Hickman who came down by land
report that she sunk a short distance below that place. The second, after being
struck, was taken in tow by two of the
attending tugs, and run upon a bar, when
her stern gradually sunk, leaving her
bow and smoke-stacks visible from the
Island.

The forces on the Island are in fine
spirits, and feel confident of their ability
to keep the enemy from advancing by
water.

The enemy, sixty in number, came
down in small boats, through the swamps,
to Gayoso, where they captured seven
citizens who formerly belonged to Gen.
Thompson's army. They were enabled
to make this foray in consequence of the
overflow, which effectually prevented
them from advancing in force by land
at present. They have a steam saw mill
in operation at New Madrid. Their land
force is estimated at 40,000, and the fleet
on Monday was three gun-boats and six
mortar boats.
