On Wednesday, 14th instant, the Rev. John Thornton Kirkland, D. D. L. L. D. was inducted into the office of President of Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. His Excellency Governor Gerry delivered an address in latin, to which the President elect replied in the same language: a latin oration was pronounced by the Librarian, an inaugural discourse in English by the President, and an English poem by Mr. Frothingham, of the senior Sophister class: a Greek ode by Mr. Story, and a latin ode by Mr. Bingeman, undergraduates. In the evening an illumination of the university buildings & a splendid ball closed the festivities. That ancient seminary had never before a fairer prospect of all the pleasure and advantage which can arise from having at its head a scholar and a gentleman.
