Full Text

Extracts from the Salem Gazette.

We once heard of an Officer of the Customs assert that there was not a Revenue Officer in the employment of Great-Britain, from the highest to the lowest, that could not be bribed. From what he formed his opinion of the corruptibility of men in such service, he did not say. Our Canada neighbors however seem disposed to turn the tables against us in that respect, or the Canadian Courant says,

"This town [Montreal] has for several months past been constantly visited with Custom House, or deputy Custom-house Officers of the United States. Some of them, we are informed, make heavy purchases of Goods for the purpose of smuggling, while others are here watching such as attempt to smuggle for the purpose of informing and gaining to themselves the booty."
