Full Text
The Bi-Centennial celebration in Philadelphia has had the effect of causing an almost total suspension of business in this city. On Wednesday Seidel Hastings rolling mill, the Jackson & Sharp works, and the Diamond State Iron works were closed entirely while at Bowers & Dure's Car shops, Harlan & Hollingsworth's, Pusey & Jones and the Lobdell car wheel works, nearly all the hands were absent.
A Market street merchant said this morning that for all the business that was being done he would have been as well off to close up until the celebration is over. Although the weather was delightful last evening, and the moon shone brightly, Market street was almost deserted, and it seemed as though three quarters of the population of this city had gone to Philadelphia.
Lodges and associations met, and the few members that did attend were unable to hold a meeting for the want of a quorum. The City Fathers were also infected and neither the Street or the Law Committee held their meetings on account of absentees.
The newspaper man searches in vain for locals, and consoles himself with the reflection that the Quaker City will not have an opportunity of again depopulating Wilmington with a like celebration, for at least one hundred years.
