"My God! What a Change!"
This was the expression of an old gentleman, on perusing one of the late federal papers which was filled with the abuse of the present Chief Magistrate. If the people would take the trouble to compare the papers of two years past with those that have been published within six months, they will one and all exclaim—what inconsistency! What opinion must we have of a man that will one day blow hot, and the next cold—one day crying out that we have too much liberty and the next abusing it? Liberty of speech and of the press is the boon of a republican government, and he who violates that liberty is not fit to live with freemen ; but if ever there was a day in the United States of America, when the liberty of the press was abused, it is this. Those very people that two years ago were crying out against a free discussion of the affairs of government, now come forward like madmen, and vent their malice upon every thing that is brought forward by the republicans; but, thank God, the citizens of America are too enlightened to be long deceived ; they begin to see through the artifices, & will like the sun burst through the cloud that conceals the iniquitous deeds of their enemies.
