Make Your Labor Day A Safety Day
While we would not be so rudely positive as one who advised people to stay at home on Labor Day and off the highways, it would be consistent with our policy in warning again that care and caution be observed on the highways.
It is certainly no contribution to our intelligence for such a high rate of casualties to pile up as to suggest that the cost and suffering would offset the value of our holiday observance.
It is highly possible that a holiday might be observed to great advantage and with profit if the celebrants would just observe a little caution in their operations on the public highways.
Our set holidays in this country are significant; they have historical inferences worthy of ennobling and that emphasis on principles and practices purely American.
Labor Day has a strictly American significance. It had its origin back during the administration of President Cleveland when it was observed that as labor rose in importance that it should have a holiday. In that it would have an educational occasion in which the people of the country would not only pause to rethink our labor questions, but would gain a firmer appreciation of our industries and that key segment in the machinery of the greatest enterprise on earth, our labor interests.
The first Monday in September will mark, therefore, a huge celebration; it should and will take its place among America's great and proud holidays; as such, let the people come into the full appreciation of what labor has meant to the building of such a great American structure, by their insistence upon caution and safety in its celebration.
Therefore, make this a safety Labor Day.
