The results of a study of the outbreak of tetany in beef cattle will be outlined at a public meeting for beef cattle raisers on Tuesday, January 6, it was announced by James A. McHenry, county agent.
He said that beef producers in the county were faced with a serious problem. A serious outbreak occurred in 1957 at which time more than 300 brood cows that were due to calve were lost.
During the outbreak a research team from the University of Maryland composed of representatives of the various departments and the Maryland Livestock Sanitary service, visited Garrett county to collect data. Findings were compiled and Dr. I. C. Haut, director of the Agricultural Experiment station at College Park, has arranged for Dr. Leffel, Dr. Plumer and Prof. Ellington to present their findings at an open meeting. The meeting will be held at the vocational agriculture classroom of Southern High school at 7:30 p. m., on January 6.
McHenry urged all beef producers to attend since there would be a discussion about what is going to be done from now on regarding the disease.
