"Our situation, with respect to political affairs in this province, is very unhappy. The spirit of the people is much raised, and they are determined to oppose the acts of Parliament regulating the government, and even treat all those very ill who are supposed to favour them; so that I know not how soon I shall be obliged to pay you another visit, for I believe they will suffer none of the Church of England to remain here, if they get the authority, for they suppose them all to be Tories: I have never heard from Mr. Nels since my return, till this day. We have a report that he and all the episcopal clergy in Connecticut government have been ill treated by the mob there, who are more violent than in this province, with much less reason to be so, as they are not affected by these acts. This town is garrisoned and guarded by five regiments, so that we are safe from their insults, and hope we shall escape. If our present difficulties should subside, and peace and quietness be restored to our once happy land, I shall send you an order, and am, &c."
