Plays "God" To
Jail Inmates

NEW ORLEANS (ANP)-- Joseph Bartholomew, 60, one of this city's wealthiest Negroes, was jailed for 10 hours last week on being charged with contempt of court.

Bartholomew, a witness in a theft case, did not appear in court at the requested hour, and was sentenced to spend most of the day in the parish prison.

During the short period of his incarceration, Bartholomew shared his wealth, or at least a part of it, with prison inmates, buying them candy, cigarettes and ice cream.

The prisoners regretted the departure of the man who played God. For his kindness they welcomed him back.
