MT. Vernon. Ill., June 15, 1878.
Dear Sir: We are making preparations to have a soldiers' reunion in this city on the 14th and 15th days of August next, which we hope will afford great pleasure and gratification to all who may be present. We are aiming to make the affair the most attractive and satisfactory one of the kind ever had in the state.
We invite soldiers of all wars alike, as well as citizens who will, to be with us, and we especially desire your presence.
Very respectfully,
J. W. BAUGH.
W. BARG. CASEY.
L. R. LEGGE,
GEN. W. B. ANDERSON
Com. of Invitation
The same gentleman has also received the following letter from Col. Tom Casey, explaining the invitation and giving information of what kind of an affair may be expected:
Mt. Vernon, Ill., June 13, 1878
Dear Colonel:—You will see by the enclosed that the soldiers of "all wars," as well as all other people, are to be here on the 14th and 15th of August. I have been requested to invite you to be present, and to bring with you as many of the soldiers and citizens of Alexander county as you possibly can. Our executive committee have named you as chairman of the committee of Alexander county, and wants you, if you please, to fill up the number to seven. Advise Gen. C. W. Pavy at this place, of the names you add to the committee. When you write to him please give him the names of any soldiers of the Black Hawk or Mexican wars that live in Alexander county. I understand that the railroads will reduce their rates one-half. The General and his staff, all the state officers, Generals Sherman, Sheridan, Shields, and a great many others will be here. It will be the biggest thing of the kind that ever was in the Western country, and we would be glad to see a small army from Alexander county.
Respectfully yours,
T. P. S. CASEY.
The Colonel says that he will be glad to have all soldiers send in their names to him at as early a day as possible in order that an organization may be had with a view to taking part in the grand reunion. An early day will be fixed for a meeting to be held in this city to make arrangements for organization and transportation.
