NEW-YORK ELECTION.

The editor has been at some pains to collect the materials of the following statement of the result of the late election in this state, and of the present comparative number of the two parties in the legislature: We all know, and an immense majority of the people rejoice, that republicanism is triumphant; but an exhibit, showing at one view their relative strength, has not before been published. The one below, although not official with regard to the Assembly of the state, is correct. Our election law, as to the return of votes for members of Assembly, is defective. The votes for Senators are communicated, by the clerks of the respective counties, to the Comptroller and Treasurer of the state who are by law appointed to canvass and publish a correct statement of them. Would it not be well to add to the election-law, in respect to the Assembly votes, a provision similar to the one by virtue of which those of the Senate are thus returned and published? At present the returns of votes for members of Assembly are made to the clerks of the respective counties in whose offices, in some instances, they remain unpublished to the citizens at large. From the offices of the county-clerks they ought to be transmitted to the heads of departments and by them published. In this way the votes of the state would be drawn to a focus, whence a correct statement of those of the respective counties and of the whole, might be promulgated for the information of the citizens at large. For want of this system the votes of the counties of Otsego, Cayuga, and Chenango, have not, that we know of, been published. We have examined in vain a file of the Albany Register for a statement of them, where, and where alone, if not in the Citizen, we might expect to find one. The amendment suggested would, in our opinion, be an acceptable and valuable one. It would enable us to ascertain, annually, the progress or decline of the two parties. It would present facts of no small moment and furnish data for ingenious speculation. The difficulties hinted at prevents, in most cases, our annexing to the names of the members of the Assembly, the majorities by which they respectively prevailed; and as this could not be done in all, it is thought best not to attempt it in any. It is however confidently asserted that the Republican majority of the state is at least 20,000.

RELATIVE NUMBERS OF THE TWO PARTIES.

In the years 1798 and 1799 the federal had a majority in both houses: in the Senate it was very large.

ASSEMBLY.

In 1800 this branch consisted of 108 members: of these there were

Rep. Fed.

This year by the aforesaid alteration in the constitution the number of the Assembly was reduced from 108 to 100.

Total Republican majority in the Senate,
Republican majority, 68!!

This statement supersedes the necessity of remark.--Federalism is emphatically in the "last ditch" in this important, and, within a few years back, notoriously federal state. It may admit of a doubt whether it is even desirable to see the federal party in a state of profounder humiliation.

The above is a happy illustration of Hamilton's "federal chain" that was to "encircle the Union!"

* No federal opposition in this county.
* Wholly federal last year.
Last year one was federal.
