We gave yesterday, in our columns, quite a good sized extract from quite a lengthy leader in a late number of the Richmond Whig, going to show that a marked change had recently come over the disposition which that spirited and influential journal had, heretofore, exhibited towards their Northern brethren of the Opposition. It would seem as if this view of matters was hardly peculiar to the Whig, at Richmond, judging from the tone and temper of the Morning News, Mr. Botts' more especial organ there. That paper, too, has been experiencing an apparent summer glow in its feelings towards the Northern Opposition. A recent threat put forth by such papers as the Washington States, to the effect that co-operation with the Democracy in the organization of the House was expected, and demanded of the Southern Opposition members elect to the next Congress, has induced the News to come out with a very explicit and somewhat startling enunciation of its views on that question. Alluding to this gratuitous advice it makes bold to say this:
We hope the Southern Opposition members will treat such trickery as its past history shows it merits, and proceed promptly to cast their votes for any fair, intelligent and honorable Republican that may be able to help in squelching the pseudo Southern States Rights Democracy. Let them be extinguished with a will. Let honest error even, prevail over premeditated and self seeking duplicity. Let us shake hands, even with an open enemy, rather than cherish and nourish in our blindness a secret foe.
This enunciation has had a startling effect upon the sensitive Southern organization of our next door neighbor—the elder Democratic Organ, and has induced it to come out in a highly wrought and virtuously indignant string of anadversions. Mr. Botts suffers severely at its hands. We are told that "on more than one occasion in his public harangues, he has announced his preference for Abolitionism over Democracy." And again, that "free negroes are in his estimation as good as Democrats." In fact, he is put in the same kettle of fish with "Foster, Kelly and Fred Douglass," to say nothing about "Seward, Greeley and Giddings. The "whole Whig force" is conjured "to unite with the Democracy" and "crush the head of the political monster," viz: the Northern Opposition, with which the News, and Botts, the Richmond Whig, et al, are now seeking to identify the Southern Opposition.
To-Day elections occur in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, and Minnesota, all of which are important in their results, but two of which are especially important, we mean Pennsylvania and Ohio. Public attention is now eagerly turned towards these two States, and the telegraphic reports of to-morrow, meagre although they must be, will be impatiently awaited by thousands of people all over the country. There seems now but little room to doubt the complete success of the Opposition in these two States; still there is no knowing, for what Mrs. Partington says of things in general, when affirming that doubtful things are always uncertain, is especially true, and always has been of the State of Pennsylvania, in the matter of politics. We confidently expect, as we most sincerely hope for an Opposition triumph. Should we be disappointed we should feel that "the clock of ages" was going backwards, as was so impressively said about the battle of Waterloo. In other words, we hope for victory, because we believe that the best interests of our country call for it.
