Police Items—Fifteen cases were before the "most wise and learned" Justice Higby, this morning, before that gentleman could swallow his matutinal cup of coffee and rolls. This is a practical verification of the adage that "justice never sleeps," or, at least, is liable at any time to be despoiled of its morning nap. The cause of this intemperate haste was this: These men were found trespassing on the public highway and wrongfully appropriating the canopy of heaven for bed curtains; and as the spirit of the law, as interpreted by the learned justice, is violently opposed to such impertinences, they were hurried to jail, though they declared they were waiting for the morning train, (which declaration, as every man of sense knows, is foreign to the issue.)—And that they might go by the Port Byron train this morning the magistrate sacrificed his pleasure to their desires and the demands of justice. Thirteen of them went away with their pockets $2 lighter, besides costs, and two of them paid $5 to the judicial exchequer. It is thus that our radical officials are enabled to wear fine linen and fare sumptuously every day.
