NORTHERN STAR.
THIS DAY MORNING DEC. 9.
Providence papers, the citizens of our metropolis have been honouring Captain Crighton, of the navy, with publick dinner. We are not captious in our objections to attentions paid to people in office; but we fear vanity will creep in, when the mouth is opened to receive these complimentary viands. Some of our naval officers are more celebrated for demolishing fortresses of pastry, than those oaken walls, which floated upon the Atlantick, under the Cross of St. George, during the late war: and rounds of beef and bottles of wine, serve to make portly looking gentlemen, to grace the quarter-decks of our national vessel. Some folks eat into favour, and some folks eat themselves out of favour; but generally speaking, there is no great harm comes of eating; and then again it makes them feel so well, to be toasted off in madeira, and supped away in turtle, and devoured in the shape of sour crout and pickled onions, that we cannot find it in our nature to object to PUBLICK DINNERS.
