New Malt Tax May Hit Brew

Every six bottles of home brew will now be taxed one cent when the new federal revenue measure goes into effect. The charge will be indirect in as much as the tax is $1 per case on malt syrup.

Locally it is not known how much the government will derive from this tax. There are those who point out that most malt is used in the making of bread but as unflavored malt is usually used for making the staff of life it must be that a certain amount of flavored malt goes into pastry and possibly into the manufacture of "home brew".

Not knowing the annual sale in the town and county it would be difficult to give the exact amount that the government can anticipate from this new tax.
