Full Text

Elder Stebbins, of the Methodist church, has for a Sabbath or two past, been giving our people sermons adapted to the necessities of the times. If ever the pulpit—that great power of moral reformation—was called upon to speak, it is now. Self preservation demands of those who occupy those places to speak—to speak emphatically—determinedly, and continually, until the danger be repelled. For how can the church flourish or indeed be sustained, if the influences now seeking complete dominance in the country are successful. It is but a short time since that a woman in Virginia was imprisoned for teaching human beings to read the word of God, and such is the law of that State—and it is the influences which made that law which are now seeking the control of the country. If the pulpit is not called upon to repel such an influence, we are at a loss to guess what its duties can be.

The Elder's words are timely, fitting, and we are glad to believe effective.
