HOUSEWIVES' ARMY MEETS.
War Bread Baking Movement May Be Started in Norwich.

A meeting of the Housewives' army was held at Buckingham Memorial on Wednesday afternoon with a good sized attendance. Mrs. Henry Higgins, chairman, presided, and various reports were given. Mrs. Higgins read several suggestions sent by the state chairman, Mrs. Hayward, and announced that Mrs. Hayward would be the speaker at the next meeting. The suggestion was made that a movement be started for the baking of war bread in Norwich one day a week, preferably Wednesday. Miss Nellie J. Campbell gave an exceptionally interesting and enlightening talk on various phases of necessary conservation. Being in such close touch with first hand sources of information as she is in her connection with the farm bureau, she was able to present facts as to food conservation in the very plainest way and with the utmost clearness. She spoke of the extravagance hitherto in our manner of living due to America's wealth and prosperity and of the stern patriotic duty now confronting us of learning and practicing the elimination of waste of the substitution of what we possess in abundance for the materials so sorely needed by our allies and our soldiers. She alluded to the prospect of gardening and canning next summer and the effort we must all make to help along and do our share in the educational part of inspiring others.
