Textbook Writers' Symposium To Air
'Interpreting Virginia History'

Speakers will discuss Virginia geography, literature and history at the summer lecture series of the Institute of Southern Culture at Longwood College, July 10.

Lectures will be held in Jarman Hall at 11 a.m., 4 p.m., and 8 p.m. and are open to the public.

"Assessment of Virginia's Natural Qualities by Explorers and Early Settlers," will be the topic of the morning lecture. It will be given by Dr. Gary S. Dunbar, a geography instructor at Longwood. A native of New York state, Dr. Dunbar holds a Ph.D. degree from Louisiana State University and the A.M. and A.B. degrees from the University of Virginia.

Professor C. Hugh Holman will deliver the afternoon lecture. His topic will be, "Ellen Glasgow and the Southern Literary Tradition."

Dr. Holman is an American literature professor at the University of North Carolina. He holds the Ph.D. and A.B. degrees from North Carolina as well as the B.S. degree from Presbyterian College.

Concluding the program will be a symposium on, "Interpreting Virginia History." Speakers for the evening program will be Dr. Marvin W. Schlegel, Longwood history professor; Dr. Lawrence Burnette, Jr., field editor and representative for Charles Scribner's Sons; and Miss Spotswood Hunnicutt, an American history teacher at James Blair High School in Williamsburg. All symposium speakers participated in writing of the textbooks on Virginia history that will be used in the public schools in the near future.

(Dr. Schlegel holds the Ph.D. and A.M. degrees from Columbia University and an A.B. degree from Susquehanna College. The holder of the Ph.D. and A.M. degrees from the University of Virginia, Dr. Burnette, holds the A.B. degree from Richmond College of the University of Richmond.

Miss Hunnicutt received her A.B. degree from Longwood College and holds the M.A. degree from the College of William and Mary.

The Institute of Southern Culture was established at Longwood College in 1956 to promote the study of traditional aspects of Southern civilization through academic course work, special lectures and through publication of research in the field. It is financed by the Longwood College Alumnae Association.
