FROM COLUMBIA.

At a late hour this day, we received Caracas papers to the 14th June inclusive, from which we learn that on the 27th of May, Lieut. Col. Dolores Hernandez arrived at Valencia, for the purpose of acquainting His Excellency, the General in Chief, with the events in Maracaybo and Coro. The following is the substance of his report: On the 13th of last month, Commandant Padilla with the vessels under his orders, forced a passage over the bar of Maracaybo, and entered into the lake with the loss of one vessel only which (agreeing with the information received from a deserter of the battalion of Valencey, and who escaped from Cumarevo) we know was sunk by our vessels to prevent the possibility of its becoming serviceable to the enemy, having run ashore at the entrance of the bar.

Colonel Lorenzo, with a strong column of 600 men, consisting of 4 companies of Valencey, the whole of the battalion of the Loyals, 40 of Burgos, and 8 of cavalry, had proceeded from Maracaybo, to assist the fugitives of the regiment of Burgos; in the performance of which duty, the 40 men referred to, joining him; and having attempted to fall back on Maracaybo, he halted three days in "el Ancon," from this spot our vessels which had sailed from Punta de Palma, were seen in pursuit of the enemy who were seen taking refuge in the town. Lorenzo's column advanced towards Coro, and on its approach, Lieut. Col. Gonsalez retired in the direction of Cumarebo.

The place was therefore taken possession of by the enemy, who marched to the vicinity of Pirttin. Lieut. Col. Gonsalez having halted in Capatare with a view of getting a supply of horses for the cavalry. His Excellency, the General in Chief, in consequence of this information, marched at the head of 1500 infantry and 72 cavalry, towards "Palito," from whence he ordered Lieut. Col. Dolores Hernandez to advance for the purpose of reconnoitering in the neighborhood of the river Tocuyo, and to gain positive information of the enemy's position.

The army remained in the above position until the 3d, when Hernandez returned with advices from Lieut. Col. Gonzalez that the enemy was stationed between Cumarevo and the Sierra, and his Excellency ordered the battalion of Boyaca, and 22 lancers, to march to reinforce the division of Coro, the command of which it was supposed would be assumed by Col. Torrellas, and proceed to overthrow the enemy. The remainder of the army returned to Valencia.

OCCUPATION OF THE LAKE OF MARACAYBO,

By the Naval forces of Colombia.

From El Colombiano of Wednesday.

June 11.

At seven o'clock last night, the very important information was officially received in this city, of the occupation of the lake of Maracaybo by our forces, and we hasten to present the detail to the public, to satisfy the anxiety so long felt for the result of our operations in that quarter.

REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA.

"Head Quarters, Maracay, June 9. 1823.

"Excellent Sir,—I have this moment received a communication from the Commander in Chief, of the Department of Zulia, dated the 31st of last month, in Bettijoque, which contains the following intelligence:-

"I have received a communication from the commander in Chief of our squadron of operations against Maracaybo, Brigadier General Jose Padilla, in which he makes the following communications to me, on anchoring yesterday in the port of Moporo:

"After having overcome infinite and almost insurmountable difficulties, I remain possessed of the lake of Maracaybo since the 8th inst. with the squadron under my command, consisting of three fine brigs of war, seven schooners, and a respectable division of small craft.

"On the 20th inst. the squadron was attacked by that of the enemy, composed of two divisions; one of which consisted of two brigs, seven schooners, and two pilot boats; the other of fourteen vessels of small craft, among which were two large flecheras. The engagement lasted an hour and a half, and the victory was ours, with the trifling loss of 3 men killed and 3 wounded; whilst the enemy had 15 of the former, and 20 of the latter, according to the information of several prisoners whom we took, together with a schooner of the enemy's. Among the killed on the part of the enemy, are the two senior officers of their squadron. In the afternoon of the 25th, our small craft engaged that of the enemy, and after killing several of them, and doing them considerable damage, we sunk their principal flechera, called the Cuayrana, saving, however, her artillery and stores, and some prisoners; these latter voluntarily joined our standard, being part of those troops who surrendered to the enemy last year at Garrabulla.

Thus, I transmit to your Excellency this favourable and interesting information, which predicts the entire possession of the important point of Maracaybo. This province already begins to benefit by the influence of the laws of Colombia, and this event will make its defenders for ever memorable.

God protect your Excellency many years.

JOSE ANTONIO PAEZ."

To his Excellency, the General and Intendant of the Department of Venezuela.
