Gentlemen: In your paper of Friday last, appeared a "Communication concerning the Christian Register and Family Expositor," under the signature of the Rev. D. Barry and the Rev. Mr. Wyatt, assigning their reasons for relinquishing the further prosecution of their proposals.
It would appear, from the language of their communication, that the Washington Theological Repertory originated, and was set on foot, by the Editors, in the spirit of opposition to that contemplated work. Such a sentiment, if widely circulated and believed, is calculated not only to make impressions unfavorable to the purity of the motives by which they have been actuated, but also highly prejudicial to the circulation of a work, which has been undertaken with a single eye to the advancement of genuine Christianity.
They, therefore, feel it their duty, in justice to themselves, and from the respect and esteem which they cherish for their Reverend Brethren in Baltimore, to disavow any thing of that nature. They are indeed unwilling to believe, that their Reverend Brethren intended to throw out any insinuations calculated to produce the unfavorable impressions to which they have alluded, & hope that it has been done through inadvertency.
They, however, embrace this opportunity to declare, that, for more than two years past, they have been endeavoring to carry into effect the object of their undertaking, and have been prevented solely on the ground of not being able to procure a gentleman of piety and talents, whose time might be devoted to the superintendance of the work. This obstacle being removed, by the offer of Mr. Ashmun to do this, and take upon himself the pecuniary responsibility of the publication, the Editors did not hesitate to issue their proposals agreeably to their long contemplated object.
With respect to the publication of the prospectus of the Churchman's Register and Family Expositor, on the 9th of June last, and while the convention of this Diocese was in session, it is proper to observe, that, some days preceding the meeting of the Convention, a notice appeared in some of the Baltimore papers, declaring that the work above referred to would be published under the patronage of the Convention. But that it was generally supposed, at the time when the Convention adjourned, and so understood by many then present, that the Editors had relinquished their contemplated work. Under this impression, the Editors of the Repertory issued their prospectus, and will this day publish the first number of the work.
In concluding this explanation, they would observe, that it would be an event highly to be deprecated, equally as painful to them, to meet with any collision from their brethren, as it can possibly be to any members of their own or any other communion. And it is only in the cause of truth and justice that they will contend with any man, and then only in the mild language of christian forbearance and long suffering. The work which they have begun, they hope will become extensively useful in effecting the accomplishment of their desires, by directing and leading some of the wandering and lost sheep of the human family back to the fold of Christ.
The unexpected encouragement already afforded this work, having in the short space of 3 or 4 weeks, amounted to nearly 1000 subscribers, they feel it their duty to proceed, and, as far as

the washington theological repertory was not started in opposition to the christian register and family expositor; delays were due to staffing issues now resolved, and proposals were issued under the belief the other project was abandoned, with strong subscriber support affirming their christian motives.
