Full Text

The Sunday law passed at the last session of Council went into operation yesterday, and seriously discommoded many of our citizens. The ordinance makes it a penal offence for any house to keep open and transact business, except for "funeral purposes." Of course this cuts off drug stores, and compels the druggist to cease operations. Whether the filling of prescriptions would come under the head of "funeral purposes" or not is a debatable point, and as it is as yet undecided no medicines could be sold yesterday. We think the putting up and selling of medicines, although a mere business transaction as far as the druggist is concerned, a work of necessity, and mercy, and are confident that at the next session of Councils the law will be so amended as to exempt druggists from its provisions.

The sale of goods by a number of our clothing merchants on Sunday week proved quite a profitable transaction for the city treasury, as over two hundred dollars in fines have already been imposed and collected.
