The intelligence received from the Mediterranean, the authenticity of which our reason, as well as our wishes, forbid us to doubt, must fill the heart of every man in America, (not being a barbarian or a monster) with joy, pride, and exultation, not only on account of what has been done, but as it is a prognostic of what this country will yet accomplish, when the insolence or encroachment of foreign nations shall render vigorous military and naval enterprise necessary to her honour or to her safety. That a nation of presumptuous barbarians, and piratical robbers should be scourged, must be the wish of every honest nation in the world. To the English, Irish and Scotch it must be matter of sovereign exultation that this their consanguineous nation, this other self, this first born child of their own race, this happy branch of their old stock, one family, though living in separate houses, and having separate interests, should have proved themselves so true to their blood, and such full inheritors of those virtues which have for centuries engaged the admiration and respect of the world, and covered those islands with never fading laurels. It has been said by the leading military men of all countries, that the army of the English, Irish, and Scotch mixed together, are irresistible; and Voltaire, national though he was, has left the sanction of his opinion to strengthen that assertion; history too irrefragably proves it. What then may not be expected from such an amalgamation of the three as this people now is. The cool, unimpassioned bull-dog courage of the English; the furious lion-like intrepidity of the Scotch and the hardy, energetic game-cock fire of the Irish, combined in one, and the same body, and that body invigorated by plenty and comfort, animated by conscious independence, and set in active motion by the powerful elastic spring of liberty, must soon be an overmatch for any aggressor, soon trample under foot any barbarous nation, whether Mahomedan or Christian, which may attempt to violate or encroach upon its rights.
