Full Text

June 18. Last Saturday came on, at Westminster Hall, a very remarkable Tryal between a young Gentleman, Son to a certain great Nobleman, and a young Lady. The Action was brought for a thousand Guineas, which the Gentleman had agreed to pay the Lady, or marry her, if she would grant him a Favour. The proper Securities being taken, and the tempting Fair one then complying, my Lord found himself, the next Day, so perfectly satisfied, that he could neither think any more of Marriage, or entertain the least Thought of parting with his Money. Several Messages having passed in Consequence of this Breach of the Contract; the Lady at last determined to prosecute her Right in due form of Law. Accordingly a Jury being impanelled, the several Witnesses examined, and the Writings produced, it was decided, Nem con. that tho' the young Peer had made a foolish Sort of a Bargain, yet, in Consideration of having had value received, he was found by the Laws and his own Hand Writing, to make good the promised Sum; with some Douceurs besides, by Way of Recompence to the Lady, for having been obliged to lay her Cause before the Public.
