Eleven Bullets Mortally Wound Mechanic in Fiancee's Apartment
Berlin, July 24.-(P)-Martin Van Halder, a mechanic from Milwaukee, Wis., was shot eleven times and mortally wounded today by the former husband of his fiancee.
Albert Plattau, an escaped convict, did the shooting, barricaded himself in the flat occupied by the woman, and kept police at bay for two hours until he was severely wounded.
Van Halder, who is 29, was taken to a hospital, where it was said his case was hopeless.
Plattau found Van Halder in the apartment, and, exclaiming to the woman "You have betrayed me!" fired several shots at her. The bullets missed her, but Van Halder grappled with Plattau and was wounded in the struggle. A workman who tried to aid him was also wounded, but not seriously.
