STAGE CITY, SOLANO CO., Aug 29, '61.
HON. JOHN CONNESS-Dear Sir: Some of
your opponents persistently assert that you
are pledged to the support of a certain Bank
head measure. Will you be kind enough to
inform me whether or not such is the fact?
And oblige yours, truly
M. M. RICHARDSON.
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30, 1861.
M. M. RICHARDSON-Dear Sir: In answer
to your note, I have only to repeat what I
have said through this canvass everywhere,
that I am not pledged to the support of any
"Bankhead measure;" that those who so assert
are uttering a base and unmitigated falsehood,
and, that if elected to the office of
Governor, I could not nor would not support
any measure of the kind which did not comport
with the greatest degree of the public
interests, and which was not absolutely necessary
for the promotion of those interests. If
elected by the votes of the people, no man
or set of men shall control my action in regard
to public affairs.
