Murder Charges Faces Guard

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 16. (UP)—Harry V. Mason, 36-year-old California Shipbuilding corporation guard who shot and killed Gerald Edwards, 18, as he tried to leave the yard Saturday was held on charges of murder with bail set at $5000 by the municipal court.

The Negro youth, who held an honorable discharge from the merchant marine, assertedly refused to obey Mason's command that he leave by another gate and was slain as he left by gate three.

Witnesses said Mason had ordered Edwards to get his time checked before leaving and the youth replied that he had not worked that day, was only on the yard to get his check and was not required to pass through the regular pass-out gate.
