From the South-Carolinian.
TEMPERANCE ADVOCATE.

We are gratified to perceive, from the following Circular, that the proposition of the State Temperance Society, to publish in this place, a paper under the above title, to advocate the great and good cause of Temperance, has met with a warm approval, and liberal encouragement, so far. At a meeting of the Young Men's Temperance Society, of Charleston, on the 22d inst., the object was brought forward and zealously advocated, and a Committee was appointed, consisting of the Rev. T. Smyth, Rev. Dr. Davies, Col. C. G. Memminger, Dr. Henry R. Frost, Wm. King, Esq. and W. P. Finley, Esq., to take measures for the promotion of it; and we trust that it will meet with such aid and encouragement, from the Temperance Societies generally, in this and other States, and also the citizens, individually, as to enable it to go into early operation, and ultimately to realize the most sanguine expectations of its philanthropic and public-spirited projectors. The bold, energetic, enlightened and efficient movements recently made in Tennessee, Mississippi, &c., present a highly cheering and noble example to our own and other States, which may well be proud to follow it, and furnish a reasonable hope that if properly appreciated, the greatest scourge and curse of modern times—the most fruitful source of human degradation, crime, misery, and ruin, in every shape—may soon be driven from the earth, or at least from our own loved and deeply injured country. Can South-Carolina, so distinguished for an enlightened, liberal, and generous public spirit, be indifferent to such an evil—such a curse—such an example?
