London, Eng., cablegram.-A great crusade for the revival of temperance work in Ireland was inaugurated at the custom house, Dublin, in the presence of a vast and enthusiastic audience on Monday. The Rev. Father Hays of Nottingham, one of the foremost and best-known Roman Catholic temperance advocates in England, opened the proceedings with a vigorous and eloquent oration, at the close of which large crowds took the pledge. The societies taking part included the Irish Association for the Prevention of Intemperance, the Band of Hope Union, the Church of Ireland Temperance Association, the Father Matthew Society, and League of the Cross, the Dublin Workers' T. A. Association, and others. Representatives were present from all parts of Ireland, and the arrangements were carried out by an influential committee, including Messrs. H. Wigham, W. Dunn, B. L., H. Cosgrove, M. A.; S. Comas, J. P.; W. Shea, J. P.: A. J. Nicholls, LL. B., and J. B. Moriarity. In days gone by Ireland took a prominent part in temperance reform, and it is pleasing to find efforts for a revival of the work attended with eminent success.
