DEAF MUTES
Organize an Association at Waterville,
Waterville, Aug. 30.
Maine deaf mutes to the number of 100 met here yesterday afternoon and organized an association by the election of the following officers: George W. Wakefield, Brownfield, president; Major P. Bicknell, Saco, secretary; Albert L. Carlisle, Bangor, treasurer. A social meeting was held last evening. Prof. Job Williams, principal of the Hartford School for Mutes, preached a sermon this afternoon. Much interest was manifested in the meetings. The representatives are an intelligent body of men and women. Prof. Job Williams of Hartford, Conn., Prof. Thomas L. Brown of Flint Institute, and Rev. Samuel Rowe, state missionary, were present and added greatly to the interest and value of the meeting, and it is confidently believed that this movement will result in great good to the deaf mutes of Maine and will be followed by permanent and combined action for their benefit.
