The Panic in the South—Reports have recently been published concerning the attack which had been made by the Union Naval fleet upon New Orleans, all of which were undoubtedly untrue, but there are a few facts concerning the Federal movements towards that city which may be counted on as certain. One is that the Government has secured a rendezvous on Ship Island, and one on two other points in the vicinity of the city, where troops can be easily landed, and were depots for provisions and ammunition can be securely placed, and another is that, besides the regular blockading force, there are at the entrances of the Mississippi river two United States sloops of war, a large propeller gunboat, the steamer Water Witch, an armed schooner and a pilot boat, all of which are ready active operations. In the vaults of the bank of New Orleans, which have been aiding to the extent of their power this outrageous rebellion, there are upwards of twelve millions of specie, and in the store-houses of that city there eleven thousand bales of cotton, worth one million two hundred thousand dollars. The wholesome effect of the Hatteras expedition, and the reported fitting out of another fleet of the Southern coast, is having its effect among the rebels, and a perfect panic is said to prevail about their safety in case of an attack from a naval force. Already Gov. Brown, of Georgia, has ordered the call of five regiments for the protection of his own State, and I would not be surprised to hear of the recall of other troops from the army in Virginia for home defence.
