Federal Aid to Roads in Public Land States A statement showing the amount per mile and the percentage of the total cost that can be paid on Federal Aid work in certain public land states from the $50,000,000 recently authorized for the fiscal year beginning July 1, has been issued by the bureau of public roads of the United States department of agriculture. Fifty per cent of the cost, not to exceed $16,500 per mile, is the maximum participation in all states except those containing unappropriated public lands in excess of 5 per cent of all the lands of the state. For these states the special provision is made that the government may participate to the extent of 50 per cent plus a percentage ratio of the total estimated cost equal to one-half of the percentage which the area of the public land bears to the total area of the state. The maximum aid of $16,500 per mile is increased by a like percentage. This has been done to insure the construction of important trunk line highways through thinly settled regions. The table is as follows: These are based on the area of unappropriated public land as reported by the secretary of the interior and may be changed on July 1 when new figures are reported. <table><tr><td>State</td><td>Percentage</td><td>Maximum</td></tr><tr><td></td><td>Payable by</td><td>Fed-Aid Pay-</td></tr><tr><td></td><td>United</td><td>mentt per mile</td></tr><tr><td></td><td>States</td><td>$16,500 basis</td></tr><tr><td>Arizona</td><td>61.11</td><td>$20,167.20</td></tr><tr><td>California</td><td>59.31</td><td>19,575.49</td></tr><tr><td>Colorado</td><td>56.12</td><td>18,521.43</td></tr><tr><td>Idaho</td><td>58.01</td><td>19,144.97</td></tr><tr><td>Montana</td><td>53.04</td><td>28,734.51</td></tr><tr><td>Nevada</td><td>87.22</td><td>28,734.51</td></tr><tr><td>New Mexico</td><td>61.50</td><td>20,207.58</td></tr><tr><td>Oregon</td><td>61.13</td><td>20,175.12</td></tr><tr><td>Utah</td><td>74.85</td><td>24,701.89</td></tr><tr><td>Wyoming</td><td>64.65</td><td>21,335.83</td></tr></table>
