FOR EMBEZZLEMENT,
Head of a Well-Known Stockton Firm Under Arrest.
Frank E. Austin, of the well-known general-agency firm of F. E. Austin & Co., of Stockton, was arrested in this city last night on a warrant sworn out by Bull & Grant, the J-street dealers in farming implements, charging him with embezzlement.
The main office of Bull & Grant is on Main street, San Francisco, and it was from there that orders came to the Sacramento branch to place Austin under arrest. Austin, it appears, also has an office in the Bay City, and during a recent stay there contracted to make various collections for Bull & Grant throughout the country, from farmers who had bought farming implements of that firm on time. Austin made the collections and reported the fact to the San Francisco firm, but, it is stated, did not send the money with the report.
Austin is well known and liked throughout the State, and has the reputation of being honest and upright in all his business dealings. As soon as it was learned that he was in trouble his friends had him out on bonds last night. Austin states that the whole matter is the result of a business misunderstanding on the part of Bull & Grant and that it will be speedily rectified to-day when the case comes up in the Police Court. The sum said to be involved is but little over $100.
