Our townsman, Alfred Ingalls, always fertile in expedients for lessening the cost and labor of mechanical operations, has just invented a machine to accompany his patent Tire Heater—which, by the way, has proven itself a great success. The article in question is called an "Upsetter," and is intended to lessen the cost and labor of upsetting or shrinking wagon tires. With the usual method of cutting and welding the tires, most blacksmiths are compelled to heat the tire at least three times—once to cut it, once to weld it, and once to finish up the weld. This, it will be seen, is at the cost of considerable labor and fuel. The Upsetter shrinks the tire by force applied with a lever of great power but of very simple construction, and does it in a few seconds—with but a moderate heating of the iron, and does not perceptibly thicken the parts, as in welding—thus making a much smoother, nicer job. The machine is very simple, and can be made by any blacksmith in about two days' time, and at small cost. It has power to shrink a much thicker bar of iron than any tires in use. It can be graduated to any dimensions of tire, and, unlike other upsetters, moves in the exact circle of the tire, so that when the shrinking is done, no work is needed to give proper form to the tire. It is certainly an admirable invention as regards simplicity, cheapness and beauty of operation. With it and the tire heater a tire can be shrunken and set in about fifteen minutes, making the labor in this department of blacksmithing very immaterial. Mr. Ingalls has applied for Letters Patent.
