Full Text

Extract of a letter from an eminent merchant in London, April 13.

"We have had another effort for the repeal of the duty on tea, by Alderman Trecothick's making a motion in the House, on the 9th instant, being the day before the repeal of the duty on paper, painters colours, and glass, was to be read the third time; on which motion some ministerial members said it was not according to order, as the taking off the duty on tea had been mentioned this session in the House, and the question divided upon. Alderman Trecothick's motion was spoke to by many; and after about four hours debate the House divided thereon, 80 against the motion, 52 for it: So that the motion, being deemed irregular, nothing further could be done in it; therefore, for this session, all hopes of the repeal of the duty is at an end. The Americans are under great obligations to Alderman Trecothick, as he has taken great pains to bring about the above repeal, though attended with no better success."
