School Curriculum
Being Considered
PHOENIX, June 18-(UP) - A "streamlined" high school curriculum, fundamentally altering the basic course of study of Arizona secondary education was before the state board of education today and will be submitted to state high school principals for consideration.
Increase of electives, until almost one-half of the student's study may be of his own choosing, in the fields of his speciality, or major, was a part of the new plan.
Additionally, there will be an increase of the social studies, so that three years work in economics, sociology, history, and other related matter will be required.
English requirements will be altered, if the new plan is adopted, so that debate, oratory, drama, or journalism may be substituted for requirements. Three regular English requirements would be required.
Algebra, and geometry, under the plan, will not be required. In their places, a student would be permitted to take a combination course, one of several substitute survey courses, or commercial mathematics. In science, laboratory requirements would be elemental.
The new course of study was announced by Dr. Herman E. Hendrix, state superintendent of public instruction. Following action of the state board, and of high school principals, it may be adopted as uniform requirements in state schools, but will not go into effect during 1937, he said.
The general purpose of the proposed change was to permit greater diversity of training in the survey courses, and to bring classroom work closer to present day events.
The social studies were proposed to "be taught in the light of interpreting present day life," and to interpret modern government principals. American history would be studied with special attention to present applications.
In science, the requirement would be fulfilled "in a course of wide scope, containing preferably greater emphasis on the biological sciences."
